7. Apply lime according to ph level
8. Aerate once a year
9. Overseed in fall or spring
10. Scout regularly for weeds and pests
Organic vs. Inorganic
With current legislation patterns and a growing environmental conscience; organic, earth-friendly fertilization practices are the future of the turf-care industry.
While the goals of turf management stay the same (build a thick healthy lawn and it will prevent grub and crabgrass on its own) the way we go about reaching these goals is a little different now.
While spraying harmful chemicals all over your lawn works, you end up with a lawn that is dangerous for children and pets while only appearing to be healthy. The organic approach starts with the soil and the roots, applying organic nutrients to the soil, thus building a strong footing for a thick lawn free of chemicals that actually is healthy.
Outside of being a safer approach, organic lawn care is also about sustainability in this fragile landscape of Cape Cod. Excessive nitrogen has leached into many ponds in the area rendering them lifeless. With our organic approach, we build the soil up to achieve the same results while using less fertilizer over time. This saves time and money as the turf grows stronger and stronger.
Modifying Our Standards
There is nothing wrong with wanting a plush, green carpet across your front yard. Unfortunately, turf-care practitioners of the past few decades have not necessarily used the best judgment. Large national companies have raised the bar in both quality of grass and dangerous chemicals spread. It has created a society that expects their lawn to be 100% weed free instantly. As a community, it is our responsibility to modify our standards for turf –care. With patience and time, we can wean your lawn off the chemicals and within a few seasons have it looking just as good as ever and safe for children and pets.
Composting
Instead of an end of season weed control, we now will offer an end of season composting. This is an environmentally safe, chemical free way to add the necessary nutrients to your lawn. It will also keep your lawn greener late into the winter months. The added nutrients will also work as a weed control by thickening up the lawn leaving less room for crabgrass to move in. In combination with a 4-step fertilization process, we can create a long-lasting, beautiful, earth-friendly lawn.
